Why Scarritt Bennett Honors Thursdays in Black

Thursdays in Black is an international campaign started by the National Council of Churches (NCC) to raise awareness around violence against women that happens every day in communities around the world.

The staff of Scarritt Bennett wear black every Thursday in solidarity with women who are living with violence. Many victims suffer in silence, afraid that they will be stigmatized by their families and communities, ultimately bringing on more violence.

Honoring this campaign is aligned with our commitment to women’s empowerment, one of the four tenets of Scarritt Bennett. Our tenets also include racial justice, spiritual formation and transformative education.

Often black has been used with negative racial connotations. In this campaign black is used as a color of resistance and resilience.

We encourage you to consider learning more about Thursdays in Black and discover ways you can show up for our sisters who are often hiding in the shadows, masking their pain. Stop by the Laskey Welcome Center at the Scarritt Bennett Center campus and pick up your own Thursdays in Black button and when folks ask what it is all about, tell them.
