Scarritt Bennett Center & Nashville Black Music Association Host 3rd Annual Black Sacred Music Weekend

Scholars, students, singers and sacred music aficionados gathered in the historic Wightman Chapel and Harambee Auditorium on the Scarritt Bennett Center campus for the 3rd Annual Black Sacred Music Weekend (BSMW).

On the evening of Friday March 27th, the W. Crimm Singers kicked off the weekend to a packed house in Wightman Chapel with a concert themed Over My Head: Sacred Sounds of the American South. Countertenor Dr. Patrick Dailey, Founder and Creative Director of the W. Crimm Singers, together, with the gifted musical artists that comprise the group also known as The Wakanda Choir, led the audience through a guided tour of the American South Black Sacred music canon. Scarritt Bennett shared the evening via live stream on its Facebook page. Find the recording here.

The next day folks gathered in Harambee Auditorium for a day of scholarly lectures entitled When We Sing Together: The Power of Singing Congregations. Tim Dillinger, a Gospel and CCM music historian, began the day making a case for the authenticity of congregational singing vs highly produced worship entertainment, noting that congregational signing opened up a democratic if not slightly delightfully, imperfect space within the worship service space. He noted, “The timber of each voice is present. The voice does not blend to nothing.” Other distinguished presenters included Dr. Emorja Roberson, Dr. Amber Dromgoole, Dr. Nathan and Suzanne Young, and Dr. San Franklin.

BSMW concluded on Sunday March 1 with a concert by The Nashville Gospel Coalition Choir, led by Christian Walker. The concert carried forward Saturday’s workshop theme When We Sing Together: The Power of Singing Congregations and was held at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church.
