Rest in Peace

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. Mark 4:39

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10

Women’s Equality Day is celebrated in the United States on August 26 to commemorate the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the states and the federal government from denying the right to vote to citizens of the United States on the basis of sex. However, African-American women did not gain this right until the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Today, women’s rights are still under attack in healthcare and employment. The fight can often leave women overwhelmed and exhausted.

On this Women’s Equality Day, may every woman remember that rest is holy, peace is promised, and God’s stillness is strength.

Take a pause. Breathe. Trust. Peace is already present—realize it through rest.

Rest as a Spiritual Command

When Jesus spoke to the storm, the external chaos of the wind and waves obeyed. When the psalmist spoke to the soul, the internal turmoil was commanded into trust. Both remind us that peace is not always found in rest—it is often realized in rest. Peace has always been present in God’s promises. Peace is there just waiting for us to perceive it.

Rest is not weakness.

  • Rest is a Response to the chaos.
  • Rest is Resistance to the pressures of the world.
  • Rest is Restoration for the body, mind, and spirit.

Rest in God’s Peace

  • Rest to Reconnect with God and others.
  • Rest to Release the weight you were never meant to carry.
  • Rest to Relax in the assurance of God’s care. God values your being, not just in your doing.
  • Rest to Reflect on the blessings that you have already received.
  • Rest to Realign your mind, body, soul, and spirit.
  • Rest to Refocus on the One who holds you steady.

In rest, we discover that peace is not something given by the world—it is the gift of Christ.

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you… Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

This week, choose to practice peace by slowing down:

  • Take a Prayerful Pause each morning before you rush into the day to honor your worth.
  • Silence the noise of constant notifications on your devices. Silence the noise of voices that diminish or dismiss you.
  • Reduce screen time and allow your mind to breathe to reclaim your soul-care.
  • Step outside and tune in to creation—the wind in the trees, the rhythm of water, the quiet testimony of the earth. Listen for God’s still small voice affirming that You are enough!

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” (Isaiah 26:3)

Women throughout history have stood in storm-tossed seas as advocates, teachers, mothers, marchers, leaders. The winds of inequality have raged, but the voice of Christ still thunders: Peace. Be still. In stillness, courage is renewed; in rest, resilience is born; in peace, the work for justice continues.

Let’s Pray:

Holy God of Peace and Justice, we thank You for the gift of stillness that restores our souls.

On this Women’s Equality Day, we remember those who fought for our rights, and we pray for women everywhere who still struggle for dignity, equity, and safety.

Grant us the courage to rest as resistance, the wisdom to reflect on our worth, and the strength to rise again in Your peace.

Keep our hearts steadfast in trust, our voices bold in truth, and our spirits anchored in You.
