Let There Be Light!
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. Genesis 1:1–4 NIV
Imagine a vast canvas—silent, void, and covered in shadow. No shape. No sound. Just emptiness. Then, into that silence, the voice of God pierces through with authority: “Let there be light!” Instantly, creation shifts. Darkness no longer has the final word. A line is drawn, light emerges, and the world begins to take form.
Just as creation was birthed through light, so too must justice, peace, and love begin with illumination. Wherever darkness seeks to hide oppression, inequality, or despair, God’s light reveals truth, awakens hope, and sets transformation in motion.
In Genesis, we see God set forth the journey out of darkness into the marvelous light:
- God Commands Light: God still speaks “Let there be light!” into our world today—into broken systems, fractured communities, and weary souls.
- God Confirms that Light is Good: God declared the light good before humanity even took form. Your light—your voice, your advocacy, your prayers, your presence—is inherently good when it reflects God’s love.
We also see the effects of light:
- Light Separates Darkness: The calling of justice requires courage to stand apart from injustice, to expose what thrives in hiddenness, and to be different in a world that often prefers shadows.
- Light Brings Change: Like a candle in a dark room, a single act of kindness, truth, or advocacy can shift the atmosphere.
However, we are not only called to “see the light” but to be the light. In a world where inequities remain—whether in race, gender, healthcare, or economic opportunity—faith demands that we shine for justice.
You are the light God is calling forth in this dark world. Shine with courage. Shine with compassion. Shine with justice.
Let’s Reflect:
- Where in your life or community do you sense God saying, “Let there be light”?
- What injustices feel cloaked in darkness, waiting for truth and love to shine upon them?
- How might you carry God’s light into spaces where despair seems to have the loudest voice?
Let’s Pray:
Creator God,
From the very beginning, You spoke light into darkness and declared it good. Today, we hear Your call again: “Let there be light!” Shine in the brokenness of our world. Expose systems that thrive in shadows and bring justice where injustice has long lingered.
Illuminate our hearts, that we may reflect Your goodness and truth. Give us courage to separate from the darkness of apathy, fear, and silence, and to step boldly into the work of peace and justice.
May our light bring warmth to the weary, guidance to the lost, and hope to the oppressed. And may all we do be a reflection of the Light that has no end—Jesus Christ, the Light of the world. Amen.
