Jesse Jackson: Expanding the Moral Imagination of American Democracy
Today we honor the life and legacy of Jesse Jackson—pastor, organizer, presidential candidate, and founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition.
Rev. Jackson expanded the moral imagination of American democracy. Through the Rainbow Coalition, he brought together Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian, poor white, labor, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities under a shared vision: that justice must be inclusive, and democracy must work for the least of these.
In a time when authoritarian impulses resurface—when fear is weaponized, dissent is criminalized, and difference is cast as danger—Rev. Jackson’s prophetic charge to “Keep hope alive” was never naïve optimism. It was disciplined resistance. He understood that fascism feeds on despair and division. To keep hope alive is to refuse surrender, to organize across difference, and to insist that love and justice still have the final word.
He believed the arc of the moral universe bends toward justice—but only when we bend it together.
🕊 Spiritual Reflection: Democracy is strongest when the margins become the moral center.
✊🏾 Call to Action: Build unlikely alliances. Protect the vulnerable. Refuse the politics of fear.
