James Baldwin: Facing the Truth We Fear

By Rev Kelli X, Director of Racial Justice Ministries

James Baldwin insisted that America’s deepest crisis was not political but spiritual. He warned that when a nation refuses to reckon with its history, it turns fear inward and outward—scapegoating the vulnerable rather than confronting its own wounds.

Baldwin understood that authoritarianism grows when people cling to innocence instead of responsibility. He challenged us to see that denial—especially denial rooted in race—is not passive. It is destructive.

As we navigate a moment marked by polarization and retreat from truth, Baldwin calls us to brave honesty and radical love. Racial justice requires more than critique; it requires the courage to look at ourselves and one another without illusion.

Spiritual Reflection: Healing begins when we release the comfort of denial and choose honest love.
Call to Action: Reflect on one hard truth about our nation or yourself that you are being invited to face with compassion and courage.
