Fourth week of Advent Meditation: The Standard of Love
As we enter the final week of Advent, the glow of candlelight reminds us that LOVE has come to dwell among us. In a world filled with hurry, anxiety, comparison, grief, and division, love can feel costly but that is what makes it holy. Throughout scripture, God calls us to operate in LOVE.
1 Corinthians 13 stands as one of Scripture’s most profound portraits of love. Paul writes to a divided Corinthian church, reminding them that spiritual gifts, eloquence, and sacrifice mean nothing without love. In Greek, the word agapē describes a divine, self-giving, sacrificial love—love that acts, love that chooses, love that perseveres. This is not sentimental affection; this is the very character of God moving through human hands and hearts.
John 3:16 reveals the greatest gift of all: “For God so loved the world that He gave…” Love is shown in giving. God initiates love not because we earned it, but because love is who God is.
1 John 3:1 invites us to accept this love “See what great love the Father has lavished on us.” Before we can give love, we must receive the abundant, lavish love of God.
1 John 4:7–12 commissions us to spread love. “Beloved, let us love one another… for God is love.” When we love, God’s nature becomes visible in the world. God’s love is perfected in us when we mirror it to others.
This is the heart of Advent Love: a love that gives, accepts, and spreads until love becomes our standard.
Let’s Reflect:
Think of the ways God has loved you this year through answered prayers, unexpected strength, quiet comfort, open doors, restored relationships, or the simple grace of being kept in the land of the living. God has lavished love on YOU. Advent invites you to let that love flow outward to your family, your community, your coworkers, to strangers, and even to those who feel challenging to love.
Love chooses patience when irritation rises.
Love chooses kindness when tempers flare.
Love covers wounds with compassion instead of criticism.
Love bends low, listens deeply, and moves toward the hurting.
Love shows up—consistently, gently, faithfully.
Love is not just an emotion…it is a decision. A posture. A daily practice. A way of being that reflects Emmanuel—God with us.
Let’s Act:
As you move through this sacred week, let love be your guide:
1. GIVE LOVE — John 3:16
Give generously—of your time, attention, forgiveness, and presence.
Offer a kind word. Return a call. Write the note. Extend grace.
Become an answer to someone’s prayer.
2. ACCEPT LOVE — 1 John 3:1
Let God’s love reach the places you hide.
Release the belief that you must earn love.
Embrace that you are seen, known, cherished, and called Beloved.
3. SPREAD LOVE — 1 John 4:7–12
Look for opportunities to serve.
Ask God whose burdens you can help lift.
Let your life preach love louder than words.
4. MAKE LOVE THE STANDARD — 1 Corinthians 13
Before you speak—choose love.
Before you react—choose love.
Before you decide—choose love.
Before you judge—choose love.
Let love be the filter, the foundation, and the flag you fly.
Let’s Pray:
Holy and Loving God, As we enter this fourth week of Advent, anchor us in Your unfailing love. Thank You for giving love so freely, for sending Your Son as the greatest gift we could ever receive. Teach us to accept Your love without resistance and to rest in the truth that we are Your beloved children.
Fill our hearts until they overflow with compassion, kindness, patience, and grace. Help us to spread love in our homes, workplaces, churches, and communities especially where love has been lacking. Make love our first response and our lasting witness. May Your love shine through us and bring healing to a weary world.
In this Advent season and beyond, may love be our standard. Amen.
