Choose Joy!

Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Joy is not just a fleeting emotion. It’s a divine choice, a spiritual stance, and a courageous declaration—especially in difficult times. In Nehemiah 8, the people of Israel had just rediscovered God’s Word after years of exile and spiritual drought. As they heard it read aloud, their hearts were overwhelmed, and they wept. But Nehemiah, the governor, along with Ezra the priest, reminded them not to dwell in sorrow—but to Choose Joy.

Why? Because “the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Joy starts with trust.

To choose joy, especially in seasons of weariness or recovery, takes both faith and fortitude. The people of Israel had to believe that despite their past failures, God was still present, powerful, and purposeful.

Joy has a sound.

Songs have a way of shifting the atmosphere. Whether it’s humming while you work or belting out a gospel hymn in the car, music becomes a gateway to joy.

Paul and Silas were imprisoned in Acts 16. Yet at midnight, they began singing hymns—and their praise unlocked more than just prison doors. It freed hearts.

Start your day with a worship song. Let your heart rise with lyrics of faith. When you’re low, don’t just speak—sing your way through.

Joy has motion.

Choosing joy often requires physical response. Whether it’s dancing in your kitchen or taking a walk outside to breathe in God’s creation—movement wakes up the joy inside.

David danced before the Lord with all his might (2 Samuel 6:14). His joy wasn’t quiet or constrained—it was expressive and unashamed.

Don’t be afraid to move! Stretch, dance, walk, or clap your hands in gratitude. Let your body agree with your spirit: I will rejoice today.

Joy has action.

Do something kind today. Write a note. Call someone. Bake cookies for a neighbor. Joy grows when it is shared through simple actions of love.
