Centered Joy

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Psalm 16:11

In a world that often celebrates hustle over healing, women often are bearing the weight of everyone else’s joy while quietly losing their own. Whether it’s balancing responsibilities at home, in the workplace, or in ministry, the constant pouring out can leave many empty, erratic, depressed, and distressed.

In Luke 10:38-42, Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary. While Mary sits in stillness at Jesus’ feet, Martha busies herself preparing and serving. Her frustration boils over, and she demands Jesus intervene—yet Jesus gently calls her by name, “Martha, Martha.” His voice isn’t harsh; it’s healing. His concern isn’t the casserole or the clean house, it’s her center. “You are worried and upset about many things…” He sees her unraveling spirit. He doesn’t rebuke her hands—He reaches for her heart. Jesus doesn’t just correct Martha , he redirects Martha to be centered!

Joy doesn’t live in productivity—it lives in proximity to God. God reveals the path of life, not just in the big decisions, but in the sacred pauses. Joy isn’t found in proving your worth through overwork; it’s in remembering you were always worthy of rest. Acknowledge your weary soul needs to be restored and filled with Joy!

Jesus did not shame Martha—He named her struggle. It’s okay to admit that you are not okay. Depression, distress, and anxiety are not spiritual failures. They are invitations to deeper care – soul care. Even biblical women had moments of unraveling—Hannah wept in anguish; Naomi asked to be called “Bitter”; Martha lost her center.

Radical Reflection

· What are the “many things” causing you worry and upset today?

· Where is God inviting you to sit down and be still?

· How can you reclaim joy by stepping out of performance mode?

Let’s Pray:

Lord, you see me when I am overworked, overwhelmed, and feel overlooked. O, God, I know that you are intimately acquainted with me. You know me by name and care for me. When I have become worried and weary, call me back to the center where joy lives. Lord, may your presence restore my mind, renew my spirits, and remind me that I am enough. Amen.
