Calm in Chaos

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6 (NIV)

Storms in Jamaica have left homes damaged and families displaced. At the same time, storms of another kind rage here—job losses, furloughs, suspended SNAP benefits, daycare and medical coverage hanging in the balance.

In both natural and personal disasters, we are reminded how fragile human systems can be. But God remains constant. Just as the winds obeyed Jesus’ command, “Peace, be still,” our hearts, too, can find calm in the chaos.

When we cannot control the storm, we can still control our posture—bowed in prayer, lifted in hope, and anchored in faith.

Let’s Reflect:

Anxiety whispers, “What if?”
Faith answers, “Even if.”

Even if the government stays shut down.
Even if the benefits stop.
Even if the diagnosis comes.
Even if the bills are due.
God still provides. God still heals. God still sees.

Jehovah Jireh—The Lord who provides.
Jehovah Rapha—The Lord who heals.
Jehovah Shalom—The Lord who gives peace.

God has you, and it—whatever your “it” is.

When we rest in God, we exchange panic for peace, despair for divine assurance, and worry for worship.

Let’s Act:

  • Pause: Take a deep breath. Inhale peace; exhale anxiety.
  • Pray: Name your worries before God. Release them one by one. Study the promises of God in Scripture.
  • Practice Gratitude: Give thanks for what remains—breath, community, love, and the sustaining presence of God.
  • Persevere: Keep showing up in faith, even when you can’t see the way forward. God’s promises are still at work in your life.

Let peace be your protest against panic. Calm is not denial—it is divine trust.

Let’s Pray:

God of Peace and Provision,
In a world filled with storms—both seen and unseen—we turn our anxious hearts toward You. Calm our racing minds and remind us that You are still in control. Be our anchor when the winds of uncertainty blow. Provide for those in need, heal the sick, and comfort the weary. Teach us to rest in Your promises and to trust that You are working all things together for our good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Peace,

Rev. Dr. Sondrea L. Tolbert
