An Attitude of Gratitude
In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)
Paul’s command to “give thanks in everything” challenges our human instincts. Gratitude is easy when life is good — when prayers are answered, doors open, and joy abounds. But true spiritual maturity grows when we learn to thank God in every circumstance, not necessarily for every circumstance.
The Greek word “eucharisteo” — “to give thanks” — holds the same root as “charis” (grace) and “chara” (joy). Gratitude, grace, and joy are intertwined. Gratitude flows when we recognize grace, and joy grows when we practice gratitude.
An “attitude of gratitude” is not blind optimism. It’s anchored faith. It sees through the lens of God’s faithfulness. It reminds us that even when life feels uncertain, we serve a “certain God” … steadfast, trustworthy, and true.
Let’s Reflect:
How do we respond to God’s faithfulness?
When we pause long enough to count blessings instead of burdens, our hearts begin to shift. Gratitude opens our eyes to the unseen mercies of God — the breath in our lungs, the strength to keep going, the community that surrounds us, the grace that holds us together.
Trust in God looks like thanksgiving in advance. It’s saying, Lord, I don’t see it yet, but I Thank You because I know You’re working.”
It’s finding peace not in outcomes, but in the One who orchestrates them.
An attitude of gratitude transforms complaining into contentment and worry into worship. It reminds us that even when the future is uncertain, God’s love never wavers.
Let’s Act:
Start Each Day with Thanks: Before checking your phone or your schedule, whisper one thing you’re grateful for.
Shift Your Perspective: When frustration rises, stop and ask, “What can I thank God for right now?”
Keep a Gratitude Journal: Write three things each day that remind you of God’s presence and provision.
Speak It Out: Thank someone who has been a blessing. Gratitude multiplies when it’s shared.
Worship Through Worry: When you feel overwhelmed, turn your complaint into praise — your “why” into “Thank You!”
Gratitude is not a reaction; it’s a **response to revelation** — the revelation that God is good, all the time.
Praise Prompts
Pause and use these prompts as daily moments of praise this week.
1. Lord, I thank You for being faithful even when I am fearful.
2. God, I give You thanks not because everything is easy, but because You are with me through it all.
3. Thank You, Lord, for peace that surpasses understanding.
4. I praise You, God, for Your consistency when the world around me changes.
5. Today, I choose gratitude over grumbling, faith over fear, and praise over panic.
Create a “Gratitude Wall” or “Blessing Board” to name your blessings one by one as a visible reminder of God’s daily faithfulness.
Let’s Pray:
Faithful God, Thank You for being our constant in every season. Teach us to live with an attitude of gratitude and to see Your fingerprints in both the sunshine and the storm. When life feels uncertain, remind us that You are a certain God, steadfast in love and mercy.
May our thanksgiving become testimony, our gratitude become grace, and our praise become power. We chose to trust You, O God! We Thank You for your goodness and your mercy towards us! Lord, we choose to focus on your faithfulness! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Grateful,
Rev. Dr. Sondrea L. Tolbert
