When Worship is a Whisper!
By Rev. Dr. Sondrea Tolbert
Psalm 51:15 — “Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.”
📖 David’s cry in Psalm 51 flows from a heart burdened with guilt, shame, struggle and deep sorrow over his sin. And yet, even in the midst of personal brokenness, David’s longing is to praise God. Let this verse guide us in our own times of struggle — when words fail, and we feel unworthy, we too can ask: “Open my lips, Lord.”
Despite Personal Dilemma
David’s life at this moment was marked by failure — yet he ran to God, not away. Like a child who knows only their parent can help, he pleaded for restoration.
When we face moral failure, guilt, or seasons of spiritual dryness, let us not be silent before God. Instead of hiding, we can humbly ask God to open our lips again — to restore our voice of praise.
Desire to Praise
Imagine a parched land longing for rain. In the same way, David’s soul longed to speak words that honor God. His desire was not only for forgiveness but for the joy of praising God to return.
God honors the sincere cry of those who long to glorify Him. Let our prayers be, “Lord, give me the will and the words to lift You high.”
Deserves Praise
The Creator who forgives, restores, and renews is always worthy of praise. Even when life falls apart, God’s goodness remains unchanged. David recognized this truth — God deserved his praise, no matter his condition.
👉 Pause today and reflect: Do I desire to praise, even when my heart feels heavy? What can I thank God for right now? Even amid your struggles, take a moment to declare His praise — for His mercy, His faithfulness, His unchanging love.
Reflection Prayer
Lord, when my struggles close my mouth and steal my song, open my lips that I may declare Your praise. Hear, O God even my whisper! Let my life be a testimony to Your mercy and grace. Amen.
