Sawubona Leadership Summit 2024

February 9 @ 5:00 pmFebruary 11 @ 3:00 pm CST

$300

The Sawubona Leadership Summit (SLS) is an immersive 72-hour experience curated by Scarritt Bennett Center’s Racial Justice Ministries. SLS invites young leaders aged 14 to 24 to align their lives with their hope for a progressively equitable society and become co-creators of justice. SLS will train student leaders to lead by exploring how young people, women, queer folk, and other traditionally marginalized people led social justice movements. SLS will teach the utilization of storytelling to cultivate compelling narratives, the execution of community organizing initiatives, and nurture self-care and sustainability.

Sawubona is a Zulu greeting, meaning “I see you”. Sawubona acknowledges the worth and dignity of the other person. “I see all of you and your circumstances”. The typical response is “Shiboka,” meaning “I exist for you”. SLS will equip student leaders to amplify their voices and teach them to see, listen, and assist in addressing the needs of those whose justice concerns differ from theirs.

The goal of SLS is to nurture empathetic spirits, ignite the desire for justice, discover women-led movements throughout history, and build meaningful relationships that respect differences.
