Dr. Brenda Butka is a retired physician who has been writing since childhood. Dr. Butka describes the events of ordinary life—her patients, gardening, an internet photo—but often ruminates about the nature of time (including the time which has lapsed since the studio portrait accompanying this) and epistemology, how we know what we know.
Dr. Butka’s poems have been published in The Threepenny Review, Florida Review, POEM, Slant, and elsewhere. Dr. Butka’s work has been anthologized by Annals of Internal Medicine, where she also was awarded Best Poem of the Year in 2017. Dr. Butka has self-published two chapbooks, Altered Geography: Little Marrowbone and Pinebark, and another chapbook, Drawing the Resistance, published by Converge, a gallery which hosted a show of drawing and poetry. Dr. Butka lives with her husband on a farm on the edge of Nashville. They have three grown daughters.
