Every election season, we hear that this is the most important election of our lifetime. The truth is, every election matters. Yet, this midterm election feels particularly consequential.
This spring, the U.S. Supreme Court significantly weakened protections under the Voting Rights Act of 1965, opening the door for a special session of the Tennessee General Assembly that resulted in the redrawing of our state’s only majority-Black congressional district.
These developments remind us that rights won must continually be defended. The struggle for voting rights is not simply a chapter in our history; it is an ongoing responsibility to protect and expand democracy for everyone.
Every opportunity to vote is an opportunity to shape the communities we call home, protect the dignity and well-being of our neighbors, and help build a society where everyone is safe, valued, and has what they need to thrive.
