Michael McBride: Writers of the Harlem Renaissance

June 23August 9

Laskey Art Gallery will feature the evocative block prints of writers that shaped the Harlem Renaissance created by renowned artist Michael McBride.

In his artist statement, McBride notes, “As an artist, I always try to create work that excites me. I have a fascination with the art movement of the Harlem Renaissance that was the epitome of African American culture. This is an ongoing series of linoleum black prints about African American writers starting with the Harlem Renaissance writers. The reason for choosing this medium was two folded, first no artist that I know of has done a block print series on African American writers, and secondly, printmaking is a discipline that I love because of its immediacy. African American artists during the Harlem Renaissance used this medium because it allowed for the production of multiple images of a single image to generate income. I look forward to the continuation of this series and hope you will enjoy the journey with me.”

The exhibit is up until August 9th, and you are invited to a special reception in the gallery on August 6th. Poet’s Corner will showcase local poets and their work around the Harlem Renaissance as a way of paying homage to this incredible body of work and the unforgettable Harlem Renaissance.

Laskey Art Gallery is free and open to the public, as is the reception on the 6th.

Parking is free.
