Week 4: Women’s Empowerment Month
During the month of March we are praying together as we celebrate women from across many professions and backgrounds during the month of March. This guide to daily prayer is designed to be simple, accessible, and invites all in the Scarritt Bennett community to prayer together as we start this year together.
March 22: The Pioneer Sally Ride
Sally Ride was An American astronaut and physicist, the first American woman to travel into space.
Short Prayer: Guide pioneers with boldness and resilience, to break new ground and pave the way for others.
Scripture: Joshua 1:9: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
March 23: The Engineer Hedy Lamarr
Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress and inventor who co-developed an early technique for spread spectrum communications, a key to many forms of wireless communication.
Short Prayer: Bless engineers with ingenuity and precision, to build solutions that improve lives and the world.
Scripture: Exodus 31:2-3: See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills.
March 24: The Musician Aretha Franklin
An American singer, songwriter, and civil rights activist known as the “Queen of Soul” for her powerful voice and hit songs like “Respect.”
Short Prayer: Inspire musicians with melody and harmony, to bring beauty and hope through their music.
Scripture: Psalm 33:3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.
March 25: The Politician Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Thatcher was a British stateswoman who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, known for her conservative policies and strong leadership style.
Short Prayer: Guide politicians with integrity and a heart for service, to lead with the people’s best interests at heart.
Scripture: Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
March 26: The Journalist Dorothy Day
Dorothy Day was an American journalist, social activist, and Catholic convert who co-founded the Catholic Worker Movement, advocating for nonviolence and aid for the poor and homeless.
Short Prayer: Bless the journalists with the courage and integrity to speak the truth. Strengthen them as they uncover and share stories that need light.
Scripture: John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
March 27: The Spiritual Guide Julian of Norwich
Julian of Norwich devoted her life to spiritual matters and offered guidance through her writings, which convey messages of love, hope, and the goodness of God.
Short Prayer: Bless spiritual guides with deep insight and a connection to the divine, to lead others in their spiritual journey.
Scripture: John 14:26: But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
March 28: The Community Builder Wangari Maathai
Wangari Maathai was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace.
Short Prayer: Inspire community builders with a vision for unity and the ability to bring people together for the common good.
Scripture: Psalm 133:1 How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!
