May I Have A Refill, Please?

Psalm 51:12 – “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”

Whether you are a person that views the glass half-filled or half empty, there comes a time in your life when you will need a refill.

In the wear and tear of life, we all experience moments when our spiritual joy runs dry. Whether from stress, loss, burnout, or brokenness—like David in this Psalm—we need a divine refill.

Psalm 51 is a prayer of repentance, but also a plea for renewal. David knows: God not only forgives but restores joy. That kind of restoration isn’t temporary—it’s a wellspring.

Here’s how to lean into the God who supplies joy—with practical steps and imagery for reflection.

1. Request Help

David doesn’t pretend. He pleads. Restored Joy begins with surrender. We must admit our depletion and call on God for help. Healing starts when we cry out. God is not intimidated by our honesty. When we ask for help, we open the door for heaven’s supply.

2. Remain Still

Joy doesn’t return in a hurry. Joy can’t be microwaved. Be still. Stillness is not inactivity, it’s intentional rest in God’s presence. Let the quiet carry you and return through quiet trust. Sometimes, silence is the sanctuary where joy is reborn.

3. Refill Your Spirit

Say it loud—“May I have a refill, please?

When your cup is empty, God offers a never-ending pour. When life drains you, God invites you back from more. God’s spirit never runs dry. Through prayer, the Word, worship, and community, God fills us again and again. God is a reliable refill station. God’s spirit never runs dry.

4. Restore Others

What God restores in us, we are called to extend to others. Speak life. Offer grace. Pour from your overflow.

5. Reserve for When You Need It

Store up your joy. Write it down. Hold tight to the memory of what God has done. Because the next valley may come—but joy, God’s joy, will sustain you.

Restore your Joy:

  • Begin your day with a one-line prayer: “God, I don’t have it all together—but I trust You do.
  • Journal honestly about what you’ve lost. Then ask God specifically for what you need—peace, clarity, strength, or hope. Each day, practice 5-10 minutes of silence before God. Let your thoughts settle. No agenda. Just breathe. Stillness creates space for God to whisper joy back into your spirit.
  • Create a refill routine: read a psalm, sing a worship song, call someone who lifts your spirit, or walk in nature while praying. Treat it like a spiritual recharge—because it is.
  • Call or text someone today with a simple message of hope. Listen without fixing. Share a verse or an experience of how God restored you. Your joy becomes their spark.

Prayer: God of all grace, restore to me the joy of your salvation. Where I am weary, refill me. Where I am broken, rebuild me. Let the joy, I receive become joy share. Refill what has been poured out and let restored joy overflow into the lives of others. Amen!
