SRO: Nashville African American Wind Symphony Packed Wightman Chapel

Scarritt Bennett Center hosted the Nashville African American Wind Symphony (NAAWS) for a Christmas Concert and Salvation Army Toy Drive for the third year in a row on Sunday, December 8, 2024.

It was standing room only for the over 300 guests that enjoyed an evening of Christmas classics, followed by a reception and photo opportunities with Santa and his elves.

Scarritt Bennett Center Executive Director Rev. Dr. Sondrea Tolbert opened the evening with welcoming remarks and read a Letter of Welcome from Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connel.

NAAWS CEO, Founder and Music Director Dr. Bruce V. Ayers, Jr. lifted his baton to cue the opening selection, a breath taking arrangement of Lift Every Voice and Sing.

The 52 member symphony wrapped Wightman Chapel into a stunning gift of sound. Selections included In the Bleak Midwinter, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, O Magnum Mysterium, and Amazing Grace.

Guests moved to Bennett Hall for a post concert reception and a chance to meet and great. Children of all ages lined up to have their picture taken with Santa.

NAAWS was founded on September 19th, 2020 by Ayers and was initially conceived as a community ensemble for college-educated musicians with a passion for ensemble performances. Evolving beyond a community band, NAAWS embraced a broader mission to offer cultural enrichment to the African American community and beyond. This shift aimed to establish a world-class wind ensemble dedicated to providing music education, training resources, and access to performing arts for young musicians.

Upcoming performances include the NAWWS Fundraising Gala on February 22, 2025.
