DESCRIPTION:Lent begins on Ash Wednesday\, which is March 5 in 2025. Come by Scarritt Bennett from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m. for imposition of ashes just outside the front doors of Wightman Chapel\, and join us for Community Lunch where we will have resources for your Lenten Practices. \nRev. Linda Furtado\, Director of Spirituality and the Arts culled Lent resources which include a litany based on Matthew 6: 1-6\, 16-12\, a finger Labrynth\, and a page where you can record your intentions for this Lenten season. \nThese resources will be available in Susie Gray Dining Hall during Community Lunch throughout the 40 days of Lent. \nAs we move into Lent there will be more opportunities which include group coloring images of the Stations of the Cross. \nMore \nThe Christian tradition has many seasons throughout the year. Lent a 40 day period that commemorates the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptations and trials. \nPeople who observe Lent often give up something they love\, like Chocolate\, for the 40 days\, while some dedicate themselves to a more rigorous practice of community service. Most people who practice Lent spend a good deal of time in prayerful self evaluation around which habits and behaviors they should discard and which they should take on for a renewed spiritual life symbolized in the resurrection of Jesus celebrated Easter day. \n  \nImage courtesy of Christianity.com

DESCRIPTION:Be a part of the Gregorian Institute of America (GIA) workshop and clinic entitled Spirituals\, Spirituals\, Spirituals! This is the second event of three during Black Sacred Music Weekend 2025 \nThe event will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday March 1 and will be led by Dr. James Abbington.  Abbington serves as Associate Professor of Church Music and Worship at Candler School of Theology\, Fellow with The Hymn Society of US and Canada\, and is a member of the Gregoian Institute of America. \nJoin us in Harambee Auditorium\, located in Fondren Hall on Scarritt’s campus\, for this dynamic session and experience the excitement of singing in a large group of enthusiastic people! You will be exposed to a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the traditional “second generation” spiritual\, and some of the most recent arrangements of “Trying to Get Ready” arr. Please join us for the “Healed People Heal People” conference in Laskey Great Hall on March 1st\, 2025.   This is a day long  conference involving a morning and afternoon session to educate victims & promote violence prevention. \nSession 1 is a Victim Education Workshop for survivors and surviving family members of violent crime. Catered breakfast will be served from 8:30am-9:00am during registration. \nSession 2 “We are the Cavalry”  we will bring the community together to reimagine what public safety can look like. Her work has been featured in The Threepenny Review\, Florida Review\, POEM\, Slant\, and anthologized in Annals of Internal Medicine\, where she was awarded Best Poem of the Year in 2017. She has also published three chapbooks\, including Drawing the Resistance. Brenda lives on a farm on the edge of Nashville with her husband\, embracing life’s quiet moments and their unfolding stories. \nJulie Sumner\nA poet\, educator\, and former critical care nurse\, Julie Sumner explores poetry as a path to resilience. Her chapbook Meridian was selected by Jane Hirshfield as the winner of the 2023 con/verge/nces chapbook contest from Wildhouse Publishing. Her work has appeared in Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel\, Delta Poetry Review\, The Intima\, Relief Journal\, The Englewood Review of Books\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Join UWF next week\, on February 6\,  from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Central Time for a special screening of Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools. The screening will be followed by a time of small group discussion and reflection. \nIn 2025 and for the next 4 year cycle in the United Methodist Church (quadriennium) United Women in Faith (UWF) reaffirms their steadfast commitment to end mass incarceration and the criminalization of communities of color\, with a special focus on interrupting the school-to-prison pipeline. This is a key social justice priority of UWF. \nIt is also a shared priority with Scarritt Bennett\, our tenents of Racial Justice\, Women’s Empowerment\, Spiritual Formation and Transformative Education. \nIf you’d like to learn more about the school-to-prison pipeline and understand ways you can make a difference in your community\, this screening is a wonderful way to begin or build upon your advocacy. \nBut that’s not all! At the end of the film screening\, UWF will be inviting you to submit an application for a film screening license to replicate this event in your own community. DESCRIPTION:Scarritt Bennett Center is excited to host a unique gifting opportunity for children and young people ages 3 – 17 designed to share the joy of giving through a free and dignified shopping experience. \nThe folks at Kids 4 Good are loading up a truck filled with gifts for the whole family. Staff and volunteers at Scarritt Bennett will unload the gifts and transform the Laskey Great Hall into a Christmas wonderland for young people and their families. \nWe are looking for volunteers to help set up the Christmas Store beginning Monday December 16th through Saturday 21st. There are a variety of roles from unloading the 4Good truck\, decorating the store and being on hand to help when the store is open on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.  Click here to learn more and sign up. \nStore hours on Saturday December 21st are from 10a – 1p. \nParents\, please register your children and young people.
